Throw Away Those Poachers!

This post is in honor of my dearly beloved dishwasher that passed away suddenly last week.

RIP sweet dishwasher!

My hubby says I killed it due to overworking it.

And that I am crazy.

What?!

A show of hands, who out there thinks I am crazy?

Alright, put your hands down so you can scroll.

You won't want to miss this!

Besides washing dishes and baseball hats, did you know your dishwasher can cook?

Yes! I said cook!

And a fine job it does!

I remember this being a fad when I was younger. About the time that they were trying to get dishwashers in every household. I kept threatening my husband that I was going to do it.

Go on, roll your eyes too.

You need to NOT have any kind of rinse agent in your dishwasher when you do this though.

Take a salmon filet, or any other fish filet of your choice....

....squirt it with one whole lemon and chopped parsley. Lay it on a double layer of heavy duty aluminum foil....

What the heck! Let's throw on a couple of lemon slices on top too.

Put another double layer of heavy duty aluminum foil on top. I could do my Rachel Ray impersonation and call it HDA foil. Naaaah....

Put it on a cookie sheet....

Now, set it on the bottom rack of your dishwasher with NO rinse agent or soap in.

That's my old dishwasher that the well water attacked.

Now turn on the dishwasher on a normal cycle and let her rip! Let it go through the drying cycle too.

And in a couple of hours....

Perfectly poached salmon!

Moist, flaky, no fear of drying out in the dishwasher or burning.

Could it get any easier?

For those of you inquiring minds, on the left of the salmon is Scallops with Chanterelles in a Brown Butter Sauce and on the right is Shrimp wrapped with Pancetta on Rosemary Skewers.

Brianna's Birthday Request Dinner last month.

The Scallops were broiled and the Shrimp skewers were grilled on the bahbie!

If you need something sweet after that....

Go check out Dar's site where she makes the yummiest dump cake ever! Her tales of living in the UP are so wonderful. I made this cake last night and it was delightful and oh so fun to make too! Topped with a simple ganache was all this cake needed for frosting.

Did this cake make my butt big?

Ummmm.....

The salmon looks beautiful! Ijust laughed soooo hard. Only you would come up with this! What an ingenious idea. I can just here myself, "No honey, dinners not ready yet, it hasn't gone through the dry cycle"!
It's things like this that make me love you~

OMG!!! I had heard of this before but thought it was just a joke! You know from the cooking comedians! It looks delicious but my dishwasher is ALWAYS full of dishes... right now a full load finished and the counter is full of replacements. Like laundry it never really ends! Theresa

I find this absolutely fascinating. The fact that you would actually try it is impressive, and then to see how it turned out -- well, I'm picking my jaw up off the ground.

BTW -- You'll notice a large collection of Stephen King novels on my bookshelves that you mentioned. I'm a fan too!

I actually think that he might really appreciate your method of cooking salmon!

That is so funny. I hope the cake recipe doesn't include the dishwasher. :)

Hi Maggie,
I did know about the salmon trick in the dishwasher. It turns out really well, doesn't it ?....and, you are left with an empty oven for other stuff.
Yours looks really good. Your daughter has great taste in birthday dinners !! XXXX

Maggie,

At first I thought this was a joke until I kept reading. How funny would it be to prepare this in front of someone who already believes you don't know your way around the kitchen! Love it! Thanks for sharing.

Your Friend,
Deborah

This is hilarious! I can't believe it! My Grandma used to keep her cookies hidden (or so she thought) in her dishwasher! Never imagined you could cook some salmon in it...I wonder how lemon Cascade would taste with it! lol

I have heard of washing the baseball caps, and mine has done that a lot; but cooking?! Never until today! This is a riot! It does look delicious, but I would want to do the shrimp and scallops in there, too!
